Visual Arts at Emmanuel

We have a long tradition of supporting and enjoying the visual arts.  For earlier artists and patrons of the arts, please see our timeline entries for Gardiner Martin LaneKatharine Lane Weems,  and Guy Lowell.

Our nave and processions are adorned with banners, mobiles, and puppets created by Sara Peattie, who has a “lair” in our basement.

Our stained-glass windows were designed by Sir John Ninian Comper, Charles Jay Connick, Frederic Crowninshield,  Harry Eldredge Goodhue, Charles Eamer Kempe, Tiffany Studio, and others. Learn more about them on these pages:

Woodworker Ted Southwick has a workshop in our basement.  We’re grateful for his repairs of our chancel’s woodwork and his refinishing of the parquet floor in our Parish hall and of the staircases in our Parish House. In 2023 his oak statue of our own saint Pauli Murray was installed in a niche on our sanctuary’s pulpit.

Several copies of famous paintings hanging in Parish Hall, our Sacristry, and the Emmanuel Room were brought to Emmanuel when they were de-accessioned from the Museum of Fine Arts.  Sandro Botticelli’s Madonna of the Pomegranate  is moved to the altar every Advent.  Known as Madonna of the Pomegranate, its original tempura painting hangs in the Uffizi Gallery (detail above).

Our pulpit and covers for the baptismal fonts were designed by the architect Henry Vaughn.  Above the credence table in our chancel is a tile of the Madonna and Child with Lilies, by a follower of Luca Della Robbia.

Our rector, The Rev. Pamela Werntz, documented her sabbatical trip with lovely watercolors of Iona and the Middle East. To see more of them, please browse the photos from 2013 on our Facebook page.

Several of our parishioners are accomplished visual artists. Building Commission chair Michael Scanlon designs our banners, posters and publications. He works with our website designer and photographer Mattew Griffing on many projects including our newsletter Voices. Cheryl Levine’s photo of Sara Peattie’s dragon puppet, worn by George Mutrie, appears as an icon for Emmanuel’s inclusive welcome on our annual report and other publications.
