Discernment

Over the years, Emmanuel Church has supported many candidates discerning a vocation to ordained ministry as priests or deacons. Our rectors have also counseled parishioners seeking to develop their lay ministry. Thanks to Julian Bullitt for the image above, which shows The Rt. Rev. Alan Gates with ten deacons ordained at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on 3 June 2023.  Our deacons (left to right) are The Rev. Joshua Cavanaugh (3rd), The Rev. Margaret Lias (6th), and Lisa Faber-Ginggen (8th).

In conjunction with a sponsoring parish and its clergy, the Commission on Ministry oversees the process of preparation for ordination in our diocese.
Its Ministry Discernment Handbook gives an excellent overview of the many dimensions of discernment. The handbook highlights the importance of developing able and well-trained ministers, both lay and ordained, and describes stages of the process congregations should follow. Questions about discerning a call to ministry can be directed to The Rev. Pamela Werntz (c/o Info@EmmanuelBoston.org) or The Rev. Canon Edie Dolnikowski (edie@diomass.org).

We are especially proud that the following clergy chose Emmanuel as their sponsoring parish or spent time with us as they contemplated their vocation.
