Do you recognize any of the authors depicted in the image above? Perhaps our first rector The Rev. Dr. Frederic Dan Huntington, the psychologist and philosopher William James, or Helen Keller? If you’re curious about someone, hover over their portrait in our gallery, which ranges from Joseph Addison to Stefan Zweig. Some of their works have been collected by our Parish Historian Mary Chitty in our virtual catalog on Library Thing [LT]. This quote from J. Greenleaf Whittier’s poem, “The Garrison of Cape Ann”, found in one of the remaining works, captures a motive for the efforts of our History & Archives Commission:
The great eventful Present hides the Past; but through the din
Of its loud life, hints and echoes from the life behind steal in.
By 2008 Nancy Mueller and Nancy Peabody had made a list of the remnant books from our Parish Library, which had been housed on shelves built in 1926 around the Parish Hall. In addition to that “circulating collection”, Mary entered into LT works that had been preserved in our archives because of their historical importance. She added subject tags to each record, so that we can browse almost 600 titles for biographies, sermons, works digitized by Google Books, and a wide variety of topics, such as the Emmanuel Movement. If you would like access to something tagged archives, please contact ArchivesClerk@emmanuelboston.org.
To browse or search for books in our collection, select Your Books in LT’s menu ribbon. You can search all of LT or just our works (select Search your library). You may search our works by author or browse our tags. If you are interested in other works by our authors, click on their names to see bibliographies of their works contained in all collections on LT. If you have questions about our catalog or Emmanuel history, don’t hesitate to contact Archivist@emmanuelboston.org.
