Furnishings & Memorials: North Wall

Letters for particular objects on this page refer to a floorplan of our sanctuary.

N5.  This marble tablet was given in 1874 by General John Hooper Reed (1827-1899) in memory of his father Benjamin Tyler Reed (1801-1874), who had been Senior Warden for ten years and a founder of the Episcopal Theological School. Once standing on the east wall of our original nave, it was moved under the Emmanuel’s Land Window by 1908. General Reed’s profile is depicted on the bronze plaque of the Soldier & Sailors Monument in Boston Common.

O. Louise Thompson Whittier (1860-) in 1922 gave this statue of a haloed saint with sword (probably St. Paul) in memory of her husband Albert Rufus Whittier Jr. (1840-1922; Harvard College Class of 1894).

P.  This tablet and canopied stone screen, designed by F.R. Allen and sculpted by Domingo Mora, were given in 1904 in memory of Andrew Gray Weeks (1825-1904), apothecary, vestryman, and warden for 17 years.

P1.  This brass plaque was installed in 2008 at the rededication of the Emmanuel’s Land Window by Gertrude Wilmers, great-granddaughter of its designer, Frederic Crowninshield.
P2. Flanking the Emmanuel’s Land Window are two bas reliefs, which were given in memory of Caroline Marie Welch Crowninshield Arnold (1820-1897) by her widower Howard Payson Arnold (1831-1910).  Sculpted by Domingo Mora, they were added about 1909 with the inscription, “To CMA, A Beloved Memory”.  On the left is a Nativity scene with an angel above the manger and on the right, a depiction of the Ascension of Jesus.
Q. A bronze bas relief of The Rt. Rev. Alexander Hamilton Vinton (1807-1881; 2nd Rector, 1869-1877) by Augustus Saint-Gaudens was installed in 1883. Composed by The Rt. Rev. Phillips Brooks, the inscription around his head reads, An earnest Christian, a learned theologian, a wise legislator, a true friend, a faithful pastor, an illustrious preacher, a patriotic citizen, a good man.  Under his hand is a verse from Psalm 40:9:  I have preached righteousness in the great congregation.  The inscription below reads: A grateful church throughout the land will always hold him in most honored remembrance.  This parish to which the last ripeness of his ministry was given erected this monument in token of its affection for him and its thankfulness to God.
