“The Death of Jesus”

Hello, Folks! I hope everyone’s Easter Weekend was filled with joy, peace, and the promise of new life amidst a time of strife.  We had a wonderful Holy Week here at common art and Boston Warm. It was an honor to take part in the community’s meaningful Holy Week traditions!

We started common art with a short Holy Wednesday service, where we read the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and then had a great discussion about the passage’s importance and modern-day relevance. We transitioned into a time of foot- and hand-washing, where pairs of members seated across from each other took turns washing the other member’s hands or feet. Identity Symbols

We had a busy-but-beautiful week here at common art and Boston Warm!  On Wednesday, I led the first rehearsal for Richie’s Easter play, “The Death of Jesus”. We did a few read-throughs of the script. On the second read-through I encouraged the cast to try their lines in a different tone and see how it would feel. Richie’s plays often have a lot of sarcasm and humor, so I especially invited the cast to read their lines in more sassy/dramatic voices. This went really well as folks seemed to get a little more in-touch with their characters and the flow of the script. Preparations

Hello, folks!  We had another great week here at common art and Boston Warm, let me fill you in.  Last week was our second week with a knitting table during common art, which has been a hit so far. We have a couple members with beanies in the making, while another member is knitting a coin purse. Documentary & Winter Walk

Hello, Folks! In December, we had our play performance of Richard Berman’s “Super Angel and the Divine Sidekicks Battle the Government”. Two Emerson College film students came to common art to film the process of the making of the play. Last Wednesday, we had the world premiere of the documentary! The documentary was wonderfully done. It was touching to see the community reflected back to itself in an art form in which few people get to see themselves represented. When different members would come on-screen, there would be hollers and cheers from the crowd. It was a great way to honor and celebrate common art and the creativity of the community. Adam, one of the filmmakers who came for the premiere,  did a Q&A with the community after the screening, which further helped members connect with the film. Continue reading →

Performing & Preaching

Hello, Folks! This was my last week at common art and Boston Warm until the New Year; and what a wonderful final week it was! On Wednesday we had the world premiere of Richie’s play with our very own Reverend Pam portraying the Voice of God! It was a great performance; it all came together very well. The whole cast really committed to their parts and brought the play to life with passion and joy. We also had a full house for the performance, and there was lots of good energy and excitement in the room. Continue reading →

Gratitude, Reciprocity & Generosity

Happy Thanksgiving week!

We had another good week here at common art and boston warm. The first rehearsal of Richie’s play went swimmingly! The cast members were game to put on their “theater caps” and brought energy and laughter to our first read-through, playing with putting on funny character voices and creating background noises where the script called for it. It seemed to me that having the rehearsal filmed was really fun for the group and helped us remind us all that the rehearsal time was important and meaningful. Continue reading →

Rehearsals begin.

This Wednesday is the first cast meeting for common art’s fall play, which I have the honor of co-directing alongside our fabulous playwright, Richard Berman! The plan is to start with a warm-up activity to break the ice and create a comfortable and welcoming meeting environment. Then, Richie will introduce the play by giving a quick overview of the plot and his vision for the performance, which will take place at noon on December 16 in the Parish Hall. Continue reading →

Happy Easter!

This week is our Easter Play! Woohoo! It has been such an honor to lead its rehearsal sessions and watch these cast members bloom into dedicated actors. I am sure the performance will be a hit; but regardless of the outcome, I am immensely proud of all of them for showing up, investing their beautiful creative energy, and humoring my weird, drama-therapy, acting exercises.     Sept.  Working with Michael Scanlon and members of the Communication Commission, Matthew Griffing redesigned our website by adapting a WordPress theme. Joy Howard wrote the text of its ‘hub’ pages (seen in the horizontal purple menu bar above).  Parish Historian Mary Chitty wrote many history pages (under Mission). Elizabeth Richardson launched blogs for our rector’s sermons and this timeline and created web versions of Mary’s building guide and Michael Shea‘s brochure Lindsey Chapel:  Its History & Architecture.

  • Oct. 9. The Emmanuel Center launched “Spirituality & the Arts”, a program of talk-back sessions moderated by Rabbi Howard Berman and our rector.  They explored spiritual, ethical and social issues raised by five plays in Speakeasy Stage Company’s upcoming season.
